Espar Airtronic Heater Fault Codes P00012A and P00012B: Why a B2L Starts Then Shuts Off

When an Espar Airtronic heater starts, runs for a few minutes, and then shuts itself off, the heater itself is not always the problem. In many new-install support cases, the cause is somewhere in the installation: fuel delivery, combustion air, exhaust routing, electrical supply, or unfinished wiring.
This case study looks at a van installation involving an Espar Airtronic S3 B2L gasoline heater kit with EasyStart Pro Controller. The heater turned on, ran briefly, then shut itself down. The customer’s EasyStart Pro controller showed P00012A, flame cutout codes P000126 to P000129, and then P00012B.
After reviewing the installation, we found two separate issues: loose fuel-line clamps and unused harness wires that had not been insulated individually. Once both problems were corrected, the heater operated normally again.

This article is not a general guide to every Espar heater shutoff problem. It focuses on one real set of Espar Airtronic B2L fault codes where startup, flame cutout, and lockout codes appeared together.

The customer’s EasyStart Pro controller showed the following codes:
- P00012A
- P000126
- P000127
- P000128
- P000129
- P00012B
These codes did not all point to one single failed part. Together, they showed a pattern: the heater was struggling during startup and combustion, then eventually entered a lockout condition after repeated unsuccessful attempts.
What P00012A means on an Espar Airtronic B2L
If you searched for P00012A Espar, this code usually points to an unsuccessful starting process rather than one single failed part.
In simple terms, the heater tried to start but did not complete the startup sequence correctly. The cause can vary, so P00012A should not be treated as an automatic sign that the fuel pump, controller, or heater body has failed.
P00012A can point toward:
- Fuel delivery problems
- Combustion air restrictions
- Exhaust restrictions
- Fuel filter issues
- Metering-pump strainer issues
- Installation errors that affect startup combustion
In this case, the first installation error was fuel related: the fuel-line clamps were not fully tightened.
Loose fuel-line clamps can affect fuel delivery consistency. On an Espar metering-pump fuel system, small installation issues can interrupt startup combustion or allow air into the line. That can make the heater start, run briefly, and then shut down.
After the customer tightened the fuel-line clamps, the P00012A code disappeared.
Why flame cutout codes appeared too
The customer also saw these fault codes:
- P000126
- P000127
- P000128
- P000129
These are flame cutout codes. They indicate that the heater detected flame loss during the start phase or within a heating control range.
An Espar flame cutout fault often means the heater lost stable combustion after startup. When flame cutout codes appear together with P00012A, the first checks should focus on combustion conditions:
- Fuel quantity and fuel supply
- Fuel-line clamps and hose connections
- Fuel filter or metering-pump strainer
- Combustion air intake
- Exhaust routing or blockage
- Flame sensor checks where required by the repair process
In this case, the flame cutout codes cleared after the customer tightened the loose fuel-line clamps. That made sense because the heater’s fuel delivery was likely not stable enough for reliable combustion.

What P00012B means
If you searched for P00012B Espar, this code means the heater has locked out after repeated unsuccessful start attempts.
P00012B is different from P00012A and the flame cutout codes. It indicates an operating lockout after too many unsuccessful start attempts. In other words, the heater may have recorded too many failed starts and locked itself out to prevent repeated unsafe or unsuccessful operation.
That is why this case had two stages.
First, tightening the fuel-line clamps resolved P00012A and the flame cutout codes. But the heater still had P00012B. It would attempt to start again, then shut itself off after a few attempts.
At that point, the fuel issue was no longer the only problem. We had to continue checking the installation.
The second issue: unused wires were not insulated
During the next inspection, we found that unused wires in the heater harness had not been insulated individually.
Some of those exposed wires were able to touch metal surfaces around the installation area. That created an electrical issue that kept the heater from recovering correctly.
Once the unused wires were insulated individually and secured, P00012B disappeared.
This is a small detail, but it matters. Any unused heater harness wires should be insulated one by one and tied back so they cannot contact metal, sharp edges, hot surfaces, or moving parts.
Fuel-line checks for the Airtronic S3 B2L
For the Airtronic S3 B2L, fuel-line length and routing must follow the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
The AS3 B2L uses separate fuel-line limits for the intake and pressure sides:
- Intake side: 6.6 ft max (2 m)
- Pressure side: 13.1 ft max (4 m)
Do not treat this as one combined fuel-line length that can be routed however you want. The intake side and pressure side have separate limits.
Also check that the fuel lines are:
- Cut cleanly
- Fully seated at each connection
- Secured with the correct clamps
- Protected from heat, movement, sharp edges, and abrasion
- Routed away from exhaust components
- Installed according to the heater manual
Fuel lines should not be under excessive pressure. Keep pressure within the manufacturer’s allowed range, up to 2.9 to 5.8 PSI (0.2 to 0.4 bar) where applicable to the installation.
In this case, the issue was not that the fuel line was too long. The issue was that the clamps were not tightened properly. But fuel-line length, routing, and pressure are still important checks whenever P00012A and flame cutout codes appear.
Why repeated restarts can make the situation worse
When a heater fails to start, it is tempting to keep switching it off and on. That can create another problem.
If the underlying installation issue is still present, repeated restarts can lead to a lockout. That is how a simple installation fault can turn into a more confusing sequence of codes.
This type of case can look like an Espar B2L not starting problem, even though the heater may briefly run before shutting down.
If your Espar Airtronic B2L repeatedly fails to start or shuts down shortly after startup, stop cycling the heater and inspect the installation before attempting more restarts. If the heater remains locked out after the installation issue is corrected, follow the approved diagnostic or controller procedure for unlocking the control box.
What fixed this heater
The fix happened in two stages.
First, the customer tightened the loose fuel-line clamps. After that, the following codes disappeared:
- P00012A
- P000126
- P000127
- P000128
- P000129
Second, the unused harness wires were insulated individually and secured so they could not contact nearby metal surfaces. After that, P00012B cleared as well.
Once both installation issues were corrected, the heater stopped shutting itself down.
What to check before replacing parts
Before replacing the heater, controller, fuel pump, or wiring harness, inspect the installation carefully.
Check the fuel system
Confirm that fuel lines are within the correct length limits, clamps are tight, lines are seated correctly, and there are no air leaks, restrictions, or damaged sections.
Check the combustion air and exhaust paths
P00012A and flame cutout codes can also appear when combustion air or exhaust flow is restricted. Make sure both paths are clear, correctly routed, and protected from blockage or cross-contamination.
Check unused wires
Unused cable ends should not be left exposed. Insulate each unused wire individually and secure the harness.
Check power and ground
Make sure electrical connections and ground points are clean, corrosion-free, firmly connected, and routed so the cable insulation cannot be damaged.
Check the correct fault-code path
